History

Abertay University, a renowned institution of higher education, traces its roots back to the late 19th century. In 1872, Sir David Baxter, a visionary philanthropist, established the Dundee Technical Institute with the aim of providing quality technical education to the people of Dundee. This pioneering institution, initially housed in modest premises, offered a range of courses in science, art, and engineering.

As the 20th century dawned, the institute continued to grow and evolve. In 1906, it moved to a new, larger campus on Bell Street, reflecting its expanding scope and increasing student numbers. The curriculum diversified to include marine engineering, navigation, pharmacy, and commercial subjects.

Notably, the institute welcomed its first female students in 1914, marking a significant milestone in its history.

The mid-20th century witnessed a period of significant transformation in higher education in the UK. The National Council for Technological Awards, established in 1955, recognized the institute's commitment to providing high-quality technical education by validating its diplomas in technology. The Robbins Report of 1963 further emphasised the importance of expanding higher education opportunities, particularly in science and technology.

In 1994, a pivotal moment arrived with the passage of the Further and Higher Education Act 1992. This legislation paved the way for the creation of Abertay University, granting university status to the Dundee Institute of Technology. The university's rich heritage, combined with its forward-thinking approach, has enabled it to thrive in the 21st century.
