History
De Montfort University’s origins lie in the Leicester School of Art, founded in 1870. The school elongated due to the demands of late 19th-century industry, introducing subjects like building, machine drawing, and engineering. In 1897, they realised that the infrastructure was no longer suitable for the students. An amount of £25,000 was raised to build a well-infrastructured school that would serve its purpose for not less than a century.
In 1930, the university's pharmacy course was recognised by the University of London and the Pharmaceutical Chemist Diploma by the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain. Later on, the University of London recognised the university as suitable for engineering.
The School of Architecture, Building and Building Crafts, and Engineering was developed in 1936–1937. The Hawthorn Building was completed in 1938–1939. Back in 1946, the varsity purchased three houses and established the first accommodations.
The Performance Arts Centre for Excellence (PACE) was funded by the Higher Education Funding Council for England with a grant of £4.5 million in 2007. In 2009, a new building for the Faculty of Business and Law (the Hugh Aston Building) was established.
They have ‘Magazine Square’ in the centre, which is the new business and law centre that had a cost of around £35 million. In 2016, the ‘Vijay Patel Building’ was established at the centre, which is a new arts and design building.
