Founded in 1885 as Edge Hill College, it was the first non-denominational teacher-training college for women in England. In 1959, male students were enrolled for the first time. History

History can be traced back to 1885, when Edge Hill College was established by a group of seven Liverpool businessmen and philanthropists. The institute got its name from the district in which it was situated. It was the first teacher-training college for women in England.

In 1959, it became a mixed college by admitting its first male students. In 2005, it was granted teaching degree awarding powers by the Privy Council, and in 2006, it was named Edge Hill University.
