Mission Statement

King's College London is committed to delivering exceptional education, conducting world-leading research, and driving positive and sustainable societal change.

Their vision, known as "Vision 2029," aims to improve the world by focusing on five key areas: educating change-makers, challenging ideas through research, giving back to society, working with local communities, and fostering global citizens.

History

Kings College London (KCL) was founded in 1829. The institution was named after the King George IV, who was the King of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland and King of Hanover from 29 January 1820 until his death in 1830.

Accodding to records, the college has a history that dates back to the 16th century with recorded first teaching in 1561, through King's Medical School, St. Thomas.

During the early stages of the academic King’s College London was affiliated under London University (now known as the University of London). The institution was the first, along with the University of London were the two affiliated colleges in London, where the government established an examining board to grant degrees. The first University of London degrees were awarded to King's College London students in 1839.

The college, having all the characteristics of a university, opened its own hospital in 1840. Through the King’s College Hospital Act 1851, the college was moved to new premises in Camberwell in 1913. The college introduced a Military department to provide tactical training for soldiers working with the Army and the British East India Company.

KCL has also pioneered evening class options for students and provided a certificate of college attendance to become eligible for the University of London degree exams. The King's College London Act 1882 (45 & 46 Vict. c. xiii) amended the constitution.

The act removed the proprietorial nature of King's, changing the name of the corporation from "The Governors and Proprietors of King's College, London" to "King's College London" and annulling the 1829 charter.

The 20th Century saw some major changes in the college ideology and fundamental rules. Through the King's College London Act 1903, KCL abolished its own religious tests for staff, except within the Theological department. Later on, KCL merged with the University of London through the King's College London (Transfer) Act 1908, losing its legal and independence rights in the process.

Major reconstruction of King's began in 1966 following the publication of the Robbins Report on Higher Education and obtained its legal independence through the signing of a new royal charter. In the following year, during the early 90s, KCL gained direct access to government funding (which had previously been through the university) and the right to confer University of London degrees itself.

In July 2006, King's College London was granted degree-awarding powers in its own right, as opposed to through the University of London, by the Privy Council. During the 2010s era, KCL has officially become a founding partner in the UK Centre for Medical Research and Innovation, subsequently named the Francis Crick Institute.  And in 2015, a 50-year lease was obtained from the council, and the Aldwych Quarter site was acquired, incorporating the historic Bush House.
