History

LJMU has an extensive legacy that dates back to 1823, when it was named the Liverpool Mechanics' School of Arts and then the Liverpool Polytechnic in 1970. In 1992, it became Liverpool John Moores University.

The name was inspired by Sir John Moores, who established the Littlewoods empire. He was a local businessman and philanthropist who made a massive investment in the foundation of the prior institutes. He had a high vision for education. Due to this belief, he invested in certain establishments.

The varsity is an esteemed member of the University Alliance, the Northern Consortium, and the European University Association. Northern Consortium is an educational charity organisation owned by 11 universities in northern England.

The university provided training, research, and education in the maritime industry. Liverpool is the maritime city of the UK, so it’s an excellent place for a maritime course.
