History

London Metropolitan University has a rich history dating back to 1848. In 1848, the then-Bishop of London summoned the clergy to set up evening classes to improve the overall condition of the young generation in Metropolis. From that, ‘The Metropolitan Evening Classes for Young Men’ was born, which later became the City of London College and then the City of London Polytechnic.

In 1992, it was granted its university status and named London Guildhall University. In 2002, the London Guildhall University and the University of North London merged and established London Metropolitan University, which happens to be the first merger between two universities in the UK.

Student Life

The student life at London Metropolitan University is pretty fun, as London is one of the most vibrant cities in the world.

  1. While enrolling at London Met, you’ll automatically become a member of the Students’ Union, which has more than 50 clubs and societies to offer.
  2. LMU has gyms, a basketball court, a dance studio, and a fitness studio with the highest facilities.
  3. There are many places for food and drinks on campus. There’s The Junction and Highbury Canteen, as well as an on-campus cafe at Aldgate.
  4. For beautiful outdoor amusements, there is a courtyard filled with deck chairs and table tennis. You’ll get to explore 40,000 bees on the roof, a large pond with ducklings in the spring, and two roof gardens.
  5. There’s a huge study space called The Rocket, which is a great place to meet up with your friends and relax. It has Wi-Fi, pool tables, video gaming, board games, and an outdoor courtyard. The Rocket hosts multiple gigs, club nights, parties, and film screenings throughout the year.
  6. There’s an event called Freshers' Fortnight that hosts special events like club nights, comedy, live music, pub quizzes, and more at the Rocket for a whole two weeks.
