In 2003, the name ‘London South Bank University’ was formed, and currently, they have 16,840 students from 130 countries and 1,700 staff.

History

London South Bank University was founded in 1892 under the name Borough Polytechnic Institute. Since then, there have been various name changes: the Polytechnic of the South Bank in 1970, the South Bank Polytechnic in 1987, the South Bank University in 1992, and finally the London South Bank University in 2003.

In 1888, a local solicitor named Edric Bayley formed the South London Polytechnics Committee with the members of the London School Board. The committee was able to raise £200,000 from the public with the aid of charity commissioners.

A meeting was held at Mansion House for the public recognition of the varsity, and by 1891, enough funds had been gathered to form polytechnics at Battersea and Borough Road, Southwark, now known as London South Bank University.

In 1890, the previous buildings of Joseph Lancaster’s British and Foreign School Society were bought for the Borough Polytechnic Institute. In 1892, Lord Rosebery officially opened the Borough Polytechnic Institute to educate the local community and gain practical skills.

The institution's courses greatly impacted laundry, leather tanning, typography, metalwork, electrical engineering, boot and shoe manufacture, and baking. Lectures were held by some of the most prestigious personas, focussing on art, elocution, literature, and science.

Borough Market is a famous market for foodies, featuring bars, pubs, restaurants, and halls serving outstanding cuisine. Burgess Park, close to the varsity, offers sports pitches, tennis courts, BBQ space, community art projects, two playgrounds, and a BMX track.

Transportation

Students prefer walking or cycling since all the halls are close to the campus. Because it is located in the heart of London, transportation routes are pretty flexible. You can find various tubes, buses, and rail connections on your doorstep.

By tube, the varsity is just 15 minutes away from central London. The Bakerloo and Northern lines stop at Elephant & Castle underground station, which is close to campus, and the varsity is just a 10-minute walk from Southwark station.

From across London into Elephant and Castle, you can find buses on a regular basis, most stopping right outside the campus. There are also night buses that stop outside campus.

The Elephant & Castle station is 5 minutes away, the London Waterloo station is 10 minutes away, and the London Bridge station is just 15 minutes from the LSBU campus.

London City Airport is the closest airport to the university, just 7.2 miles away. If you land at Gatwick Airport, Thameslink operates a train that will get you to Elephant & Castle, which runs once a week.
