Mission Statement

Robert Gordon University has a mission to transform communities through superior teaching, research, and industry opportunities. The institute promotes economic, social, cultural, and environmental sustainability. It also values curiosity, ambition, equality, respectfulness, collaboration, and authenticity.

History

Robert Gordon University (RGU), nestled in the vibrant city of Aberdeen, Scotland, has a rich history dating back to the mid-18th century. The institute was founded on the vision of Robert Gordon, a Scottish merchant and philanthropist. The university's roots trace back to Robert Gordon's Hospital, established in 1750 to provide education and opportunities for disadvantaged children.

Over time, the institution evolved from offering basic education to providing more advanced technical and vocational training. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, Aberdeen saw the rise of numerous technical and vocational schools, which eventually merged to form Robert Gordon's Technical College in 1910.

With continued progress in higher education, Robert Gordon's Technical College expanded its academic scope and became Robert Gordon's Institute of Technology in 1965. The institute began offering degree-level education and focused on research, gaining a reputation for producing industry-ready graduates.

A significant milestone came in 1992 when the institute was granted university status, becoming Robert Gordon University. RGU has since expanded its programmes, offering a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in fields such as engineering, health, business, law, and the creative industries.

Known for its strong ties with industry and practical approach to education, RGU has grown into a modern, forward-thinking institution. It continues to evolve, preparing students for successful careers in a global and dynamic world while maintaining its commitment to inclusivity and community service.
