Mission Statement

UNSW's mission is to accelerate progress for all by delivering transformative education, pioneering research, and nurturing meaningful connections with communities and partners locally and worldwide.

History

The University of New South Wales (UNSW Sydney) was founded in 1949 by an Act of the New South Wales Parliament. Its origins can be traced back to some of the earliest educational institutions in Australia, including the Sydney Mechanics' School of Arts (1843) and the Sydney Technical College (1878). The university was initially established to meet Australia's growing demand for engineers, scientists, and technologists in the post-war era. However, the university evolved over the decades into a comprehensive and globally respected university.

UNSW proudly acknowledges that all of its campuses are located on the unceded lands of Aboriginal peoples and has actively supported Indigenous education and inclusion. Milestones include the establishment of the Nura Gili Indigenous Programs Unit in 2004, which continues to provide pathways and support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, and the appointment of Professor Megan Davis as the first Pro Vice-Chancellor Indigenous in 2007, a national leader in constitutional reform and the Uluru Statement from the Heart.

Key historical milestones:

  1. 1951: First students admitted to UNSW, initially focused on technical and engineering disciplines.
  2. 1960s: Major campus expansion and the introduction of the Arts and Medical faculties, broadening UNSW's academic reach.
  3. 1971: Establishment of the UNSW Law School, which has since become one of Australia's most prestigious law faculties.
  4. 1980s–1990s: Strengthened its global research profile, particularly in science, technology, and health.
  5. 1986: Pioneered HIV/AIDS research with the founding of the Kirby Institute, which became a world leader in infectious disease research.
  6. 1990s–2000s: Emerged as a leader in solar energy innovation, holding multiple world records for photovoltaic efficiency through the work of Professor Martin Green and his team.

UNSW provides a lively and inclusive student life to enrich students’ university experience beyond academics. At the heart of campus life is Arc – UNSW Student Life, which manages over 330 student clubs and societies spanning various interests, including sports, arts, cultural groups, and academic institutions. Being part of clubs and societies also provides opportunities to participate in workshops and events and earn accreditation through AHEGS for leadership roles.

UNSW is committed to fostering a welcoming environment for international students and providing resources and support to help them settle in and pursue their degrees.

The campus is equipped with excellent facilities to support study and social life. Popular study spaces like Morven Brown, Wallace Wurth, Quadrangle, and the Business School offer comfortable individual focus or group collaboration environments. The university’s busy calendar is filled with events to keep student life exciting and engaging throughout the year.

UNSW also values inclusivity and diversity. The Division of Equity, Diversity & Inclusion leads initiatives to support all students, including designated interfaith prayer, meditation, and reflection spaces across campus for students of all faiths.
