History

The University of Northampton has a prosperous history dating back to the 13th century. Notably, Northampton briefly hosted a university from 1261 to 1265.

It was established by the Royal Charter of King Henry III, making it the third university in England after Oxford and Cambridge. However, political pressures led to its dissolution. But, higher education in Northampton re-emerged in the 19th century with the establishment of the Northampton Technical College in 1882.

In 1999, Nene College and the University College Northampton merged, marking a significant milestone in the university's development. This merger brought together diverse strengths and expanded the university's academic offerings.

Throughout the 20th century, the institution evolved, expanding its offerings and playing a crucial role in the education and training of the local community.

In 2005, a momentous achievement was reached with the conferral of full university status, recognising its academic excellence and contribution to higher education.

Campus Facilities

The University offers a most advanced and well-equipped campus with a focus on sustainability to enhance the student learning experience. The University of Northampton has two main campuses:

  1. Waterside Campus: Located in the heart of Northampton town centre, this campus offers a vibrant and modern learning environment. It's surrounded by historic landmarks and a vibrant cultural scene.
  2. Park Campus: Situated in a more tranquil setting, this campus boasts stunning landscaped grounds and offers a unique blend of academic and recreational spaces.

Academic buildings:

  1. Creative Hub: Laboratories, specialist teaching facilities, industry-standard design studios, print room facilities, photography studios, fashion workshops, science labs, Mac computing and gaming suites, rehearsal studio, and a recording suite for TV & radio.
  2. Senate Building and Energy Centre: The Senate Building consists of flexible teaching rooms, a financial platform, and a cafe zone. The energy centre uses wood chips and biomass to heat hot water. A unique 12-metre-high LED screen produces messages for staff, students, and visitors to campus.
  3. The Learning Hub: It provides 24 24-hour learning and library environments alongside its support teams and catering options. It's a building where the bulk of academic teaching takes place, including nursing, healthcare, paramedic, and policing courses. There are also traditional teaching rooms, catering facilities, bookable learning spaces, resources for students and staff, and the IT helpdesk.
  4. Student Accommodation: UoN has its own "Student Village" where students can find both on and off-campus accommodation. Students can choose from townhouses or small and large en-suite rooms. The university also has an on-site hotel, available for both campus visitors and the general public. Also has an on-site launderette, Multi-faith Centre, Health Centre, Security and Community Safety Hub, Student Village Reception, and on-site shop.
  5. Engine Shed: A home of the Students' Union, a great place to relax and meet friends with comfortable seating, short playing zone, cafe, and on-site post room.
  6. Sports Zone: The sports zone includes a 3d floodlit all weather pitch, outdoor courts, and a dome for indoor sports. For sport courses there is a sports pavilion, which contains purpose-built laboratories and research facilities to encourage people to try new things and enjoy, and offers free unlimited memberships to sports and societies. Also, they have a partnership with Trilogy Leisure to access gyms, classes, and pools at various locations.
  7. The Market Restaurant: It is one of their main catering facilities on-site, offering a canteen feel to grab and go (hot and cold) foods. It also caters to a number of dietary requirements.
  8. Waterside Bar and Restaurant: It's a great place to come and socialise. It has a bar and serves a variety of menu options, and many events and activities taking place. Overall, it's a perfect place to end your day or starting point for an evening out.
