Mission Statement

The University of Chester was formed in 1839 within an open environment followed by Christian values. This mission, which has helped shape our development and diversification, continues to inform its future planning and strengthening as a university institution.

History

The University of Chester was founded as Chester Diocesan Training College in 1839 by the esteemed members of the Church of England. It remains one of the longest-established higher education institutions in England. In 1921, the university officially became an affiliated college of the University of Liverpool.

In 1961, the institute welcomed its female students. In 1963, the university was renamed Chester College of Education. In 1974, it became Chester College of Higher Education. In 2005, the institute achieved its university status and became the University of Chester.
