History

The University of East London, UK, traces its origins to the West Ham Technical Institute, founded in 1898. To meet the increasing demand for technical education in the 1930s and 1940s, Essex County Council (ECC) established two new colleges, South West Essex Technical College in Walthamstow and South East Essex Technical College in Dagenham.

In 1970, these three colleges, along with West Ham College, merged to form North East London Polytechnic.

In 1988, North East London Polytechnic achieved university status. It was renamed the Polytechnic of East London in 1989. Subsequently, in 1992, the Polytechnic of East London became the University of East London, joining a group of newly established universities.

The University of East London previously comprised the Barking Campus (closed in 2006) and the Stratford Campus. In a significant development, the Docklands Campus was opened in 1999, marking the first new university campus built in London in over half a century.

In September 2013, UEL established another new campus, Stratford University Square. Furthermore, Hackney University Technical College, which was the first university technical college in London, gives academic sponsorship to UEL.
