History

The University of Glasgow is one of the oldest universities in the English-speaking world, founded by a papal bull in 1451. Over the centuries, it has grown from a small institution to a leading centre for education and research.

Originally in High Street, Glasgow, the university moved to the present Gilmorehill main campus in 1870. The campus contains the iconic Gilbert Scott Building and the Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, showcasing the institution's rich heritage and academic excellence.

Many famous historical figures and historic accomplishments have been affiliated with the university over the ages. Adam Smith, the father of modern economics, studied here, and John McIntyre, the Glasgow graduate who opened the first dedicated hospital x-ray department in the world.

The university hasn't been short of innovation: ultrasonography was invented in 1958 by Professor Ian Donald. Today it continues to shine as a centre of learning and nurture talents from all over the world while advancing many parts of scholarship.

Campus Facilities

The University of Glasgow has three (03) main campuses, each catering to its core area of academic focus and hence with its distinct facilities.

Gilmorehill campus

  1. Location: The West End of Glasgow.
  2. Student capacity: This is the main, largest campus of the university, with around 2,500 students. A busy hub of distinct academic and social interaction.
  3. Lecture theatres: The James McCune Smith Learning Hub contains a 500-seat lecture theatre. The rooms are equipped with up-to-date audiovisual facilities supporting different teaching styles.
  4. Flexible teaching venues: The campus has a wide range of active teaching spaces, such as state-of-the-art laboratories, seminar rooms, and computer labs. These are geared towards collaborative learning and applied experience.
  5. Cafes: There are numerous cafes situated about the campus, one of which is Cafe Rutherford, a personal favorite. Additionally, eateries and catering concessions are situated throughout the campus, offering myriad choices for food and places for students and staff to socialise.

Garscube campus

  1. Location: 4 miles from the main Gilmorehill campus.
  2. Student capacity: This campus is essentially used for the Veterinary Medicine course. It usually has a lesser number of students compared to Gilmorehill.
  3. Lecture theatres: The campus offers lecture theatres specialised to their relevant disciplines, possessing a capacity suitable for the size of their population.
  4. Flexible teaching venues: Specialised facilities include animal handling areas, clinical skills laboratories, and research laboratories, serving veterinary and scientific education.
  5. Cafes: Although the available cafes on campus are few, there are places to find something to eat and drink, and the site affords access to further amenities nearby.

Dumfries campus

  1. Location: South-west Scotland with a backdrop of 85 acres of lush landscaped parklands.
  2. Student capacity: It is the smallest of the three campuses but boasts close-knit communities of students and staff from over 40 nations. The campus specialises in environmental studies, rural studies, and related programmes.
  3. Lecture theatres: Because of the small size of the campus, there is not so much of a variety of lecture theatres other than those used for small class/teaching.
  4. Flexible teaching venues: The campus has distinct facilities dedicated to environment and rural studies, such as field work sites, labs, and computer workrooms. Also, there is a variety of other teaching and research facilities that include a teaching garden.
  5. Cafes: There are, like Garscube, few options for on-campus cafes, with other cafes and restaurants located off-campus.
