First established as College Liverpool in 1881, the institution successfully enrolled its first batch of students in 1882 and there after, became part of the federal Victorian University in the following years.

Later in 1899, The Liverpool University Press was established, ranking it the third oldest University Press in England. Students studying in this institution were awarded certificates from a different awarding body, the University of London.

Established as an independent university in 1903, the University of Liverpool quickly became a hub for scientific advancement. Early achievements include Sherrington's synapse discovery and Blair-Bell's pioneering work in cancer chemotherapy.

In the mid-20th century with the help of university resources Chadwick’s atomic research and Rotblat, and Downie's involvement in smallpox eradication provided significant contributions to scientific and atomic studies.

A founding member of the Russell and N8 Groups, Liverpool has maintained its research focus, participating in projects like the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. The university has also expanded into online education, partnering with Laureate (until 2021) and currently with Kaplan.

Liverpool boasts ten Nobel laureates across various disciplines, including Ross (the first British laureate), Sherrington, Chadwick, and Rotblat. The university is also associated with several Lasker Award winners, often considered "America's Nobels."
