The University of Southampton is a public research university located in Southampton, Hampshire, England. This institute is a founding member of the Russell Group of research-intensive universities in the UK.

Extended Overview

The University of Southampton has seven campuses in the UK, with its main campus in the Highfield area of Southampton, along with four other campuses within the city. Each campus has its own library.

It is packed with more than 26,000 students, of whom more than 10,000 are international students hailing from 130 different countries. In terms of student population, this institute takes great pride in being the largest university in the South East region.

With more than 245 undergraduate degrees, 220 postgraduate degrees, a great community, and a wide range of international scholarships, this university is a perfect place for any aspiring student. It was the first university in the UK to be awarded a license to set up a campus in India in 2024.

History

The roots of the University of Southampton can be traced back to 1862 with the establishment of the Hartley Institution. After experiencing financial difficulties in the early years, the Hartley Institute became Hartley College in 1883.

In 1902, the Hartley College became the Hartley University College, which was a degree-awarding branch of the University of London. In 1952, it was granted university status by Queen Elizabeth II and became the University of Southampton.

  3. At the Highfield campus, you can go to the Piazza Food Court, Pret a Manger, Costa Coffee, Library Cafe, and Interchange Kiosk to experience a great range of foods and drinks.
  4. If you’re up for taking some laps in the pool or want to work out, then the Jubilee Sports Centre is here for you.
  5. Got a thing for movies and music? Just go to the Turner Sims Concert Hall and the Students' Union Cinema.
  6. Just a short walk from the Highfield Campus, Southampton Common is the largest green space in Southampton.
  7. On the University Hospital Southampton Campus, you’ll find great dining options like M&S Cafe, Costa Coffee, Feast Restaurant, and the Student Canteen.
  8. The beautiful St. James' Park is just 10 minutes away from the hospital campus.
