Overview
By engaging critically with film texts, you learn to deepen your understanding of narrative structure, technique and aesthetics, as well as your appreciation of how filmmakers choose to represent class, race and sexuality on screen. Over the course of your three years, you will spend time watching and discussing films from different periods, countries and genres. The knowledge and skills you gain in our Film Studies degree makes you a thoughtful, critical thinker with skills desirable in all areas, not just the creative industries. At Winchester we understand that your perception of film becomes deeper when you bring in perspectives from other disciplines, including politics, philosophy, history, gender and race studies. You study the different histories and styles found in American, British, European and broader global industries. You are taught by a team of film specialists and industry professionals with different backgrounds, whose diverse research expertise is reflected in the breadth and scope of the curriculum. In Year 1, you explore film from a variety of angles, giving you the critical theory and knowledge to advance your understanding of storytelling and media. You also hone your creative skills through digital media, and study the rise of traditional film through to new media. Study during Year 2 is more specialised and focuses on skills and your potential career paths including an opportunity for work placements in the creative industries and more. Optional module
