Overview

Environmental change is one of the most critical and pressing drivers acting on global economies and societies. By 2050, it is estimated that climate change will cost over £45 billion annually. Addressing these complex issues requires far more than incremental improvements. Research that integrates engineering, environmental science, data modelling and design innovation is essential for developing robust, future-ready solutions that protect societies, support healthy environments, and enable sustainable economic growth. You could be a critical component in the development of solutions that manage, and wherever possible mitigate, the impacts of environmental change that must be sustainable, affordable, secure and equitable for all. Responding effectively to these challenges demands novel and innovative interdisciplinary research, bringing together expertise across engineering, economics, computational and data sciences, mathematics, the physical sciences and the social sciences to design interventions that are technologically sound, environmentally responsible, and socially just. Our globally recognised team include our prestigious Unesco Chair in Informatics and Multi-hazard Risk Reduction, and home to the globally recognised Water Engineering and Development Centre. Example research topics could be in one of these areas: enabling sustainable energy transitions, both onshore and offshore, including from hydrogen, nuclear, solar and wind; flooding and other natural hazards; water quality, sanitation and hygiene; circular resource systems and energy from waste. 94% of Loughborough’s research impact is rated world-leading or internationally excellent.
