Overview

Digital engineering underpins our research in all our thematic areas and is also an area where we lead in the development of the underpinning methodologies. The work covers all length scales starting with atomistic and ab-initio modelling in areas such as battery materials, materials for fuel cells and bio-glasses. The development of digital twins to model problems as diverse as pharmaceutical manufacturing through powertrains and the performance of automotive battery packs to the modelling of 3D printing of ceramics. We have a long history of using and developing computational fluid dynamics particular for the modelling of gas turbines, combustion and within the automotive sector. This combined with our experimental work in this area has allowed us to develop cutting edge AI models to correlate these models with wind tunnel testing. The use and development of AI and machine learning models underpins a lot of the work across the school. 94% of Loughborough’s research impact is rated world-leading or internationally excellent.
