Overview
The Department of Economics at Queen’s Business School is an energetic and enterprising academic department that continuously strives for excellence in both its teaching and its scholarship. The group’s research strengths span economic theory, applied economics, and econometrics, and are structured around three core clusters: • The economic theory cluster focuses on game theory, networks, and mechanism design. • The applied economics cluster specialises in economic history, labour economics, regional economics, and economic growth. • The econometrics cluster engages in both theoretical and applied econometrics, with expertise in panel data and financial econometrics. The group has a particular strength in game theory and economic history, and several members are actively involved with the Centre for Economics, Policy and History (CEPH) - an All-Ireland, Strand II research hub co-located at QUB and Trinity College Dublin. CEPH combines economic and historical methods to inform policy and contribute to the global Sustainable Development Goals. Aside from receiving close research supervision and direction from academics within the department, PhD students benefit from participating in courses and tailor-made reading groups designed to strengthen their background in economics. Queen’s Business School prides itself on research-led teaching and offers its research students valuable experience as teaching assistants in a variety of undergraduate courses. Students also regularly attend the School’s seminar series, which attracts leading academics from around the world. These seminars provide an important platform for students to present their work, gain feedback, and prepare for the academic job market. Mode of study/duration Registration is on a full-time or part-time basis, under the direction of a supervisory team appointed by the University. You will be expected to submit your thesis at the end of three years of full-time registration for PhD, or two years for MPhil (or part-time equivalent).
