Overview

The National General Certificate, formed in 1989, is the most widely held health and safety qualification in the UK. Courses leading to NEBOSH qualifications attract around 50,000 candidates annually and are offered by over 600 course providers, with exams taken in over 120 countries around the world. The qualification is ideal for managers, supervisors and staff from all types of organisations who need a broad understanding of health and safety issues. The certificate helps them manage risks effectively. Many people take the NEBOSH National General Certificate as a first step in a career in health and safety. It provides a valuable overview, and is a sound basis for further professional study, for example the NEBOSH Diploma in occupational health and safety, which is also offered by Northumbria University. Enhanced Career Prospects These nationally and internationally recognised qualifications demonstrate to employers that holders possess the core professional knowledge and competence in health and safety. Holders can potentially expect enhanced career prospects and a range of new opportunities. Distance Learning Route: From our many years of experience of delivering NEBOSH courses we recognise that some potential delegates are simply not able to attend every week. So, for those who would like a more flexible approach, we have developed a route that allows you to do the main bulk of studying at home, yet still provides extensive tutor support. This Distance Learning course is available to those students who are willing to travel to the Northumbria University campus in Newcastle for the exam and assessment at the end of the course. Each topic has an assignment to be completed by a specified date: these are based on past NEBOSH questions, giving you valuable experience of answering this type of question, as well as providing motivation and structure to your studies. Feedback is provided by the course tutor. We provide additional support in special face-to-face sessions at the University. Content: The modules are taught through a series of interactive lectures during which the topics are related to workplace experiences of class members. In addition, videos, slides and practical inspections, for example of the University machine shops and laboratories, are incorporated into the sessions so that the material is kept relevant and interesting. The NEBOSH Certificate is a widely recognised and respected qualification and will be delivered by highly qualified, experienced tutors over 3 units; NGC1: Management of Health and Safety GC2: Controlling Workplace Hazards GC3: Health and Safety Practical Application NGC1, Management of Health and Safety, will begin with a general introduction to health and safety management. The module will then begin to explore policy considerations, organisational requirements, health and safety culture (and its promotion), methods for assessing risk, principles of control, incident investigation and techniques/strategies for conducting reviews and auditing. GC2, Controlling Workplace Hazards, examines each of the key groups of hazards likely to be encountered in the workplace, namely those arising from: movement of people and vehicles, manual and mechanical handling, work equipment, electrical equipment, fire, chemical and biological agents, physical hazards, psychological issues and construction activities. Suitable control methods and strategies are discussed for each group of hazards. GC3, Health and Safety Practical Application, the module prepares students to: Carry out, unaided, a safety inspection of a workplace, identifying the more common hazards, deciding whether they are adequately controlled and, where necessary, suggesting appropriate and cost-effective remedial action. To prepare a report that persuasively urges management to take appropriate action, explaining why such action is needed (including reference to possible breaches of legislation) and identifying, with due…
