Overview

Delivered through a blended learning approach, combining online study with interactive face-to-face sessions, this GPhC-accredited course provides comprehensive training for pharmacists who want to become safe, confident, and effective independent prescribers. You’ll develop the clinical judgement, consultation skills, and professional insight needed to deliver person-centred, evidence-based care, while collaborating effectively within multidisciplinary healthcare teams. Designed for practising pharmacists who are ready to expand their clinical role and enhance their CPD portfolio, the course equips you to navigate the complexities of prescribing within legal, ethical, and professional frameworks. What you’ll learn You'll explore the full scope of independent prescribing, including: The impact of prescribing decisions and the principles of safe, effective practice. Legal, ethical, and professional responsibilities of the prescriber. Clinical history-taking and consultation skills to inform accurate decision-making. Application of pharmacology and therapeutics in clinical contexts. Partnership working with patients, carers, and other healthcare professionals. Key aspects of healthcare systems such as clinical governance, health economics, and the management of prescribing errors. By the end of the course, you’ll be equipped to take on the full responsibilities of an independent prescriber, ready to make informed, accountable decisions that improve patient outcomes and advance your professional practice. This is a level 7 module (equivalent level of study to a postgraduate or masters degree) worth 45 credits. Module tutor(s): Moortooza Puttaroo ; Jaime Miks; Gagandeep Degun; Mangalpreet Singh This 45-credit Pharmacist Independent Prescribing Practice Certificate (six months) can be completed by itself, or in conjunction with the 15-credit Clinically Enhanced Prescribing in Acute and Emergency Medicine standalone module (three months) in order to graduate with a full Postgraduate Certificate in Clinically Enhanced Independent Prescribing (nine months).

Entry requirements

You must be a registered pharmacist with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) or the Pharmaceutical Society of Northern Ireland (PSNI) employed in a patient-facing role, and be of good standing with your regulatory body. You must have written approval from your employer/line manager and Non-Medical Prescribing lead (if applicable) supporting your study. You should also:
