History

Aston University, a prestigious institution with a rich history, traces its origins back to 1875 when it began as a School of Metallurgy within the Birmingham and Midland Institute.

As the demand for technical education grew, the institution evolved, separating from the Institute in 1895 to become the Birmingham Municipal Technical School.

The early 20th century marked a significant period of expansion for the institution.

In 1911, commercial classes were introduced, leading to the establishment of an independent School of Commerce by 1916. To reflect its broadening focus on technology, the school was renamed the Birmingham Central Technical College in 1927.

The mid-20th century witnessed a transformative period for the college. In 1951, it was renamed the College of Technology, Birmingham, and construction began on the iconic Main Building at Gosta Green. The college's elevation to the status of a College of Advanced Technology in 1956 marked a significant milestone, leading to further expansion and development.

Queen Elizabeth II officially opened the college in 1955, recognizing its pivotal role in higher education.

In 1966, a historic moment arrived when the College of Technology, Birmingham, received its royal charter, officially becoming the University of Aston in Birmingham. This milestone marked the beginning of a new era for the university, characterised by a strong commitment to research, innovation, and student success.

The university's partnership with Birmingham City Council and Lloyds Bank led to the establishment of Aston Science Park in 1983, fostering innovation and entrepreneurship.
