Royal Holloway, University of London is an esteemed public research university located in Egham, Surrey, England, UK. This university was officially established as Royal Holloway and Bedford New College and is a member of the University of London.

Extended Overview

The Egham campus was established by the Victorian philanthropist Thomas Holloway in 1879. This institute was officially opened in 1886 by Queen Victoria as an all-women college, and in 1900, it became a member of the University of London.

In 1985, the Royal Holloway Institute merged with Bedford College and became Royal Holloway and Bedford New College. To this date, it is the official registered name by Act of Parliament. In 2022, it was granted its university status within the University of London.

They have two campuses; one is located in Egham, which is a safe, leafy campus, and the other one is in Bedford Square. The Egham campus covers 135 acres and is one of the most beautiful campuses in the world.

The Royal Holloway, University of London is listed by the Sutton Trust as among the 30 "most highly selective" British universities. The university has about 12,500 students, of whom more than 1,800 are international students hailing from more than 100 countries.

History

The history of Royal Holloway can be traced back to 1879 with the foundation by the entrepreneur Thomas Holloway. In 1900, it became a member of the University of London.

In 1985, Royal Holloway College and Bedford merged and were named Royal Holloway and Bedford New College.

Even though Royal Holloway and Bedford New College remains the registered name to this date, the name was changed for common use to "Royal Holloway, University of London" by the College Council in 1992.
