History

The roots of the University of Chichester date back to 1840 with the establishment of a training school, which was later rebuilt as the Bishop Otter College in 1849. In 1977, the Bishop Otter College and the Bognor Regis College merged and became the West Sussex Institute of Higher Education.

From 1995 to 1999, it was called the Chichester Institute of Higher Education. In 1999, it gained degree-awarding powers and became University College Chichester, later achieving full university status in October 2005.
