History

The University of Greenwich was founded in 1890 as Woolwich Polytechnic, the second-oldest polytechnic in the UK. Frank Didden founded it. Woolwich merged with part of Hammersmith College of Art and Building and became Thames Polytechnic in 1970. It got university status in 1992 and was named the University of Greenwich in 1993.

Campus Facilities

The University of Greenwich provides extensive services in terms of campus facilities.

  1. In 2014, the Stockwell Street Building was formed with funding of a whopping £76 million, which is now home to the campus library, film and TV studios, and state-of-the-art editing suites.
  2. The new Dreadnought Building lies in the centre of the Greenwich Campus, which was funded at approximately £25 million.
  3. All campuses comprise libraries with over 1.5 million books, e-books, and journals.
  4. Due to exam periods, libraries stay open 24 hours a day.
  5. You can find tonnes of resources like newspapers, magazines, videos, and maps.
  6. For the needs of the students, the university accommodates different study spaces. The students will have the perk of booking individual pods or group study spaces.
  7. New facilities have been added, including new PCs, height-adjustable desks, loan laptops, and docking stations.

The student life here is pretty exciting since it’s in London. One might experience a rich littoral vibe along with vast shopping and amusement places.

  1. London is regularly ranked among the world’s best student cities. It has tonnes to offer. You will experience a vibrant nightlife and various music and sports venues.
  2. Most of the capital’s world-class galleries and museums are free for students.
  3. Two of the most popular places for nights out are the Shoreditch and West End areas. These are great places for students to hang out.
  4. In the Medway towns of Rochester, Chatham, and Gillingham, you will find many forms of amusement, from events and gigs to nightclubs and pubs.
  5. Just a 5-minute walk from Medway Campus, you can go to Chatham Maritime, a retail park consisting of bars, pubs, a nine-screen cinema, restaurants, and famous stores.
  6. On the Medway Campus, there is the Deep End, which regularly hosts comedy events, live concerts, and quiz nights.

Transportation

Since all the campuses are near the accommodation halls, students prefer walking or cycling to get to their desired places.

  1. It has two fully electric inner campus buses and is among the first universities to offer such comfortable service.
  2. Between campuses, you can use the university bus, where some routes are free of charge and some have a subsidised fare.
  3. You will find two train stations near the Avery Hill Campus, which will take you to central London in just about 30 minutes.
