Overview
The Applied Linguistics and TESOL team, within the Department of English, conducts research in areas such as English for Academic Purposes (EAP), Second Language Acquisition (SLA), Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL), corpus linguistics and discourse analysis. We aim to support world-leading work in all these areas and to foster and develop strategic partnerships with local, national and international organisations. The Applied Linguistics and TESOL team has an outstanding international reputation. We conduct research in all areas of our field, including English for Academic Purposes (EAP), Second Language Acquisition (SLA), Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL), corpus linguistics, interlanguage pragmatics and spoken discourse. Our TESOL master’s degrees are taught by experts in fields such as spoken discourse, Second Language Acquisition (SLA), pragmatics, corpus linguistics and English for Academic Purposes (EAP). We also have expertise in other aspects of language study including sociolinguistics, discourse analysis and stylistics. The MA is unique because it offers a work experience module teaching real learners of English as an additional language and the chance to take the Cambridge CELTA at a discounted rate. Our PhD programme is open to students who have completed an MA in TESOL, Applied Linguistics, or other related field, who are interested in conducting research in one of the research areas detailed below. IELTS: 7.0 overall, with no component below 6.5 TOEFL iBT: If you took a TOEFL test on or before 20 January 2026, you’ll need 100 overall, with minimum scores of listening 21, writing 21, reading 21 and speaking 23.
