Overview

At the University of Liverpool, we’ve pioneered the study of the ancient world for over 130 years. A PhD/MPhil in Archaeology allows you to draw on world-class interdisciplinary research in diverse fields, from the origins of humanity and Old-World prehistory to the archaeology of the historical periods. TheDepartment of Archaeology, Classics and Egyptologyis internationally reputed for its world-class research, offering the ideal environment to become a recognised specialist in the field. In 1904, we established the Institute of Archaeology, the first centre for the academic study of the methods and practice of archaeology, Egyptology and classical archaeology in the UK. Fieldwork will form an important part of your research. We have several field projects based in the UK and abroad, including Bulgaria, Egypt, Greece, Italy, Iraq, Kenya, Jordan, Turkey, and Zambia. Training is also available in a wide range of ancient languages, including Greek, Latin, Egyptian, Coptic, Sumerian and Akkadian. You can study modern languages on the University’s flagshipOpen Languages programme. We have dedicated budgets for supporting research and training activities, including the Histories, Languages and Cultures Postgraduate Research Fund andThe Peet Travel Award. We’ll also provide you with tailored support for applications to external competitive funding schemes. Our Archaeology PhD/MPhil covers a broad range of potential topics for investigation. We welcome research proposals in topics including: Research in archaeology at Liverpooluses state-of-the-art interdisciplinary methods and approaches. Entry requirements

IELTS: 6.5 overall, with no component below 6.0 TOEFL iBT: If you took a TOEFL test on or before 20 January 2026, you’ll need 88 overall, with minimum scores of listening 19, writing 19, reading 19 and speaking 20. If you took a TOEFL test from 21 January 2026 onwards, when a new scoring system was introduced, you’ll need 4.5 overall, with 4 or above in all components. TOEFL Home Edition not accepted.
