Overview
About your course The BA (Hons) English Literature and Creative Writing at Liverpool John Moores University is designed to develop your writing skills while studying a diverse range of literature texts. With professional guidance and peer support from practising writers, publishers and agents, you will develop a range of high-level transferrable skills sought after by employers. Towards the end of your course, you will specialise in a chosen genre and get a feel for the life of a professional writer by writing independently but with guidance from tutors and the support of peers to help you review and refine your work. The course provides modules that boost employability through work experience opportunities. At level five, the optional English work experience module allows students to explore placement opportunities in teaching, the media, creative industries etc and develops knowledge about job interviews and writing applications, CVs and cover letters. The level six creative writing module, Writer at Work, allows students to reflect on their existing skills and explore ways of presenting themselves as writers and creative-industry professionals. There are a variety of travel opportunities including, a residential writers' retreat in rural Wales giving you a chance to perfect your skills, a field trip to Venice on an optional second year module, and LJMU’s Study Abroad programme enables you to spend a semester or a whole year studying internationally. We also host several literary events, readings, screenings and open mic nights to showcase your work at Liverpool arts venues such as FACT and The Everyman. Not only do students receive guidance from their university lecturers, but also from guest lecturers who come in to discuss their texts studied on the course. They provide extra insight into their work, leave time for questions and queries and give students the opportunity to network with industry professionals. Broadly speaking, you will spend a third of your time in formal study, a third reading, and a third writing or completing assessments and private study. The programme is constantly updated, which is why we have supplied only a sample of modules you may study. Hear Callum's story Read more
