Overview

Highlights: Our BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science (with Foundation Year) is accredited by the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS) and designed in collaboration with local NHS clinical laboratories. The foundation year prepares you for degree-level study, developing your knowledge of medical sciences together with essential academic, research, and laboratory skills. Excellent facilities include well-equipped cell and molecular research laboratories, a Category 2 pathogen lab and state-of-the-art human anatomy suite with a 3D anatomy visualization and virtual dissection tool. We're ranked 8th in the UK for Teaching Quality for Biomedical Sciences (NSS 2025) and our programme and teaching staff have been shortlisted for national awards (IBMS and AGCAS). Wide range of career opportunities - our graduates work in NHS pathology laboratories, in medical research, the pharmaceutical industry, food science, public health, forensic science and the armed forces. Flexibility to move to Medical Science or Pharmacology degrees after the first year of the standard degree course if interests change. Course Overview: If you do not have the necessary qualifications or cannot meet the entry requirements to begin the standard three-year degree, our IBMS-accredited Biomedical Science (with Foundation Year) degree provides an alternative route into undergraduate study. It equips you with a basic understanding of the anatomical, biological, and chemical principles that underpin the field of medical sciences - essential to progress to the first year of our BSc Biomedical Science. The additional year better prepares you both for higher level study and a career as a modern biomedical scientist. As well as the fundamentals of good laboratory practice you will learn core academic and numeracy skills, such as drafting essays, referencing your work, statistics, data handling and interrogation. Learning within the medical sciences at Bangor is very much hands-on, grounded in the real-world experiences of lecturers and driven by the latest scientific research. Our own expertise includes investigation into the causes of cancer and genetic aspects of birth defects, and the design of new therapies and methods to control tropical diseases. With access to innovative lab facilities, you will be taught by scientific and clinical staff from local hospitals as well as academics at the forefront of research into the causes of cancer, autoimmune disease, antibiotic resistance, and a host of other healthcare issues.
