Course Overview: The BA (Hons) Childhood and Youth Studies and Welsh addresses the growing demand for Welsh-speaking graduates with the knowledge of Welsh culture and professional expertise needed to engage effectively and empathetically with young people and their families in different contexts. During this joint degree you'll combine the study of the Welsh language, literature, and culture with investigations into the full spectrum of childhood and youth experiences, from conception to the transition to adulthood. This includes adolescence, children’s rights, development, learning, play, identity, safeguarding, mental health and diversity. You'll also explore and discuss the history, literature, and culture of Wales improving your language proficiency and cultural awareness. This Welsh medium degree is ideal for those seeking careers in Wales, for example, in teaching, academia, local government and the media, or specialist roles in social work, counselling and law. A choice of modules gives you the flexibility to tailor your studies to your interests and career ambitions. Our academic team in the School of Welsh include some of the most prominent writers and poets in contemporary Wales. Garnering international acclaim, they have won awards including Book of the Year, Prose Medals, Drama Medals, Chairs and Crowns at the Urdd Eisteddfod and National Eisteddfod. Our Childhood and Youth Studies team has expertise and backgrounds in psychology, sociology, children’s rights, linguistics, education, forensics, health and welfare. From anti-bullying and whole-school positive behaviour to developing literacy and numeracy or supporting refugees, their research is changing lives - and you will have opportunities to do the same throughout the degree. We place a strong emphasis on developing your employability. Previous students, for instance, have provided assistance in schools and nurseries, for outdoor education centres and charities that support children and young people on a range of issues, from mental health to working with young carers. You will be able to learn both theoretical and practical skills in supporting children and young people, including supporting children with additional learning needs and communication difficulties by accessing opportunities to learn communication support techniques.
