Overview

Highlights: You will be surrounded by the Welsh language, you can opt to live in Welsh-speaking halls of residence, undertake Welsh-speaking work placements, and socialise with other students through the Welsh Students' Union. Teaching is informed by internationally renowned research. From anti-bullying and whole-school positive behaviour to developing literacy and numeracy or supporting refugees, it is changing lives for the better. Strong emphasis on employability: network with leading providers in children’s services, develop skills as diverse as filmmaking for young people or communicating with children with learning difficulties. Volunteer as an ambassador with local charities, hear from and undertake short-term work placements with local children’s services providers. Benefit from professional and academic expertise in diverse areas, such as children’s rights, family law, bilingualism, education, social care, mental health, literacy, additional learning needs and inclusion. Course Overview: At the heart of Childhood and Youth Studies degrees is an approach that gives a voice to children of all ages and young people, listening to their concerns with the aim of improving their situation, whatever that may be. This Welsh medium degree is ideal for Welsh speakers and those seeking careers in Wales. It examines the full spectrum of childhood and youth experiences and their transition to adulthood. This includes adolescence, children’s rights, development, learning, play, identity, safeguarding, mental health and diversity. At Bangor University, our teaching team has expertise and backgrounds in psychology, sociology, children’s rights, linguistics, education, forensics, health and welfare. You can meet with a range of multi-agency professionals, who will share their experiences of developing successful partnerships with children and young people and their families. We place a strong emphasis on developing your employability. Regular formal, and informal, peer-led oral presentations help build your confidence in public speaking, while educational visits and guest speakers give you a head start building and engaging with professional networks. Past guest lectures have included a children’s TV producer who shared how techniques are used in both current affairs and drama-based programming to raise and address key issues that affect children and young people. You will be able to learn both theoretical and practical skills in supporting children and young people, including supporting children with additional learning needs and communication difficulties by accessing opportunities to learn communication support techniques. As part of the Welsh Government’s commitment to develop a bilingual workforce, financial incentives are available if you study this degree in Welsh. Choosing this Welsh medium version of the degree could entitle you to up to £1,000 for each year of your study - the maximum available from the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol Scholarships.
