Overview
Laying the groundwork for success in Civil Engineering Not everyone takes the same route into university, and that’s ok. If you’re passionate about working in the tech sector but don’t quite meet the entry requirements for Civil Engineering BEng (Hons), then this course is for you. The Foundation Year is your opportunity to step into Higher Education while building the confidence, skills, and knowledge you need to succeed. In just one year, we’ll help you gain a solid foundation and get ready to take on our Mechanical Engineering degree. We’ve designed the Foundation Year to give you a well-rounded start, with exciting new topics in technology, communicating ideas, and collaborative real-world projects - all building the strong foundations you’ll need to thrive in today’s fast-moving engineering industry. Your next step: the degree The degree course combines theory with hands-on experience, giving you the technical knowledge, surveying skills, and parametric design expertise to tackle real-world engineering challenges. You’ll learn to design and build everything from roads, railways, and hospitals to housing, canals, tunnels and coastal defences - always with sustainability at the heart of your decisions. You’ll learn in vibrant, hands-on labs that let you test ideas, explore real materials and see engineering principles come to life. Our specialist facilities cover everything from structures and water engineering to highways, geotechnics and materials testing, giving you the space to experiment, problem-solve and build confidence through practical discovery. The course is tightly integrated with industry, working closely with leading employers such as WSP, Robert Bird Group, Whitby Wood, Make Architects. Consultants, architects and engineers collaborate on modules, set live briefs and provide placements and feedback, ensuring you graduate with the skills and experience the sector demands. “ Opportunities to visit construction sites and interact with industry professionals prepares students for the challenges of the working world. Unlike some universities that primarily emphasise academics, LSBU equips students with both the theoretical knowledge and practical experience necessary to excel in their careers.” - Nancy, Civil Engineering BEng (Hons) graduate Our course develops your technical skills step by step, and in the later stages you’ll have the freedom to apply what you’ve learned in a creative space, producing original and innovative engineering solutions. In your final year, the Group Design Module brings all your learning together. You’ll work on exciting, hands-on projects - from reimagining Battersea Power Station and redeveloping LSBU’s Old Perry Library site to transforming the nearby Elephant and Castle Shopping Centre. Students explore sustainable redevelopment, model-making, and circular economy principles, considering how to reuse structures and minimise carbon impact. This approach encourages creative, forward-thinking solutions to the challenges of consumption and the built environment. Located in the heart of London, our campus at Elephant and Castle offers unique opportunities for site visits and case studies across one of the world’s most complex urban environments. Previous site visits have included to Heathrow Airport, HS2 and Battersea Power Station. You’ll also learn in labs and facilities for structures, water engineering, highways, geotechnics and materials supported by industry-standard software such as Autodesk, Ansys, Geostudip, Matlab and much more. This hands-on learning will help you build real-world skills and feel confident stepping into your future career. This degree is your first step towards becoming a chartered civil engineer - ready to design, build and sustain the structures that shape our cities and communities. “LSBU's Civil Engineering programme combines an ideal location, expert faculty, industry-aligned course work and valuable professional opportunities. ” - Kamruzzaman, Civil…
