Studying Welsh, Theatre and Media, you’ll discover writing, folklore, poetry, music, and theatre from Wales and Europe, both old and new. Incredible spaces for theatrical performances and a creative community that includes Pontio, our Arts and Innovation Centre, the Film Society, Rostra Theatre Society, Bangor Musical Theatre Society and Writers’ Guild. You can gain funding when you study through the medium of Welsh. Scholarships by The Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol offer up to £1,000 per year whilst the University Welsh Medium Bursary offers an additional £250 per year depending on the amount of Welsh modules taken. Course Overview: Gain a solid foundation in Welsh literature and language whilst nurturing your creative talents in the company of some of the leading creative practitioners in Wales. On this degree in Welsh, Theatre and Media, two-thirds of your studies will be devoted to Welsh language and literature. The remainder of your degree is focused on the complementary creative practices of media and dramatic production. Optional modules provide considerable flexibility to tailor your studies at every stage. At Bangor University you will have the opportunity to not only study and enjoy one of the most remarkable Celtic literatures in the world, but there will also be opportunities to pursue more practical modules that will prepare you for a successful career working bilingually. Explore rich and diverse literary texts from the tales of the Mabinogion to the dynamic literature of contemporary Wales. You can learn about the theoretical and historical aspects of theatre and media, such as the history of Welsh drama, the history of European drama, the tradition of adapting for the stage, studying Welsh screen works and the tradition of broadcasting for the radio as a medium. You can learn about writing for theatre, screen, digital media and other platforms. There is also a cross-section of modules available which give students the opportunity to cultivate and develop practical skills in the fields, such as screenwriting skills (for television and for the stage), performance and directing skills as well as production skills for the stage, the television and the radio. Some of our staff are practising professionals and consultants, bringing their first-hand experiences to the classroom. You will foster your creative talents in the company of some of Wales’s leading creative practitioners and some of the most prominent writers and poets in contemporary Wales. Garnering international acclaim, they have won awards including Book of the Year, and the highest prizes - Prose Medals, Drama Medals, Chairs and Crowns at the Urdd Eisteddfod and National Eisteddfod. Our team have experience in writing and production for radio, stage and screen settings, focusing mainly on contemporary performance practice, professional practice and assessing the impact of the arts and culture sector on today’s society.
