The foundation year prepares you for degree-level study, introducing you to essential physics and mathematics, and further mathematics, as well as academic and research skills. A friendly and informal learning environment with easy access to lecturers and an opportunity to build your confidence, knowledge and understanding whatever your background. Taught by practicing professional engineers and scientists, you’ll develop scientific and engineering knowledge, with the professional, analytical and problem-solving skills to solve future engineering challenges. Course Overview: Our Engineering with Foundation Year degree provides an alternative route into undergraduate study if. It is ideal if, for example, you don’t have the necessary qualifications or cannot meet the entry requirements to begin the standard three-year degree. The additional foundation year provides an excellent introduction to studying a science subject at university, giving you a taste of learning at this higher level. On successful completion, you will join Year 1 of the BEng (Hons) Engineering programme. This general Engineering degree offers a broad multidisciplinary curriculum. It builds on the success of Bangor University’s long history of education and world-leading research in electronic engineering. Our academics are at the forefront of innovations in digital signal processing, 5G technology and renewable energy. Content is aligned with the Engineering Council’s UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competence (UK-SPEC). Future accreditation will be sought from the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET). Our ‘sister’ degrees in electronic engineering and computer systems engineering are already IET-accredited. On this Engineering foundation year, you’ll develop essential academic skills, such as writing, communication and presentation. You’ll also learn how to conduct independent research, retrieving and analysing information from a range of primary and secondary sources. While studying the foundation year and throughout your degree studies, you’ll experience industry-standard techniques and cutting-edge equipment, from clean rooms to optical communications testbeds. You’ll explore emerging technologies like digital design and artificial intelligence (AI), fusion energy and 3D printing. This is in addition to gaining fundamental knowledge of concepts and theories in materials, thermodynamics, mechanics, physics, chemistry, maths, and programming. By the time you graduate, you’ll be prepared to tackle some of society’s greatest challenges, such as how to harness nuclear fusion to produce abundant low carbon energy, design the next generation of probes to enable space exploration, or understand AI to produce practical self-driving vehicles.
