Catrin Kean, poet Bhanu Kapil, and short fiction author Wendy Erskine are just some of the writers to pay us a visit at Bangor University. Bangor’s vibrant local arts and culture scene includes local theatres, cinemas, and poetry groups. Discover drama, dance, films, music and more at Pontio, our Arts and Innovation Centre. Course Overview: This BA (Hons) English Literature and Drama degree explores the synergies between literature - be that prose, poetry, or drama - and the practices of dramatic production, from scripting and devising to acting and directing. Connected not just by their creativity, Literature and Drama employ similar techniques to engage and inspire audiences. Informing and shaping society, they have the power to influence the mindsets of generations through their portrayal of cultural, historical or political events and themes, relationships and emotions. One of the oldest English Literature departments in the UK, Bangor’s specialisms range from the literatures of the Middle Ages and Renaissance period, through to Victorian and Modernist forms. Our Drama staff have creative portfolios in theatre, short films and production. The curriculum is designed to be flexible, allowing you to choose modules that match your career aspirations or interests. In both disciplines, you’ll be encouraged to question what you see, read, hear and portray: to think differently, develop fresh perspectives, and find innovative ways to interpret and find meaning. You will come to appreciate how the production and reception of creative works are shaped by cultural, political, and material contexts. Potential literature content spans a broad range of genres, periods, cultures and themes, analysing works from contemporary and historical perspectives. Studying Drama allows you to delve into the ways in which producers, marketing managers and artistic directors work within the industry on a local and international level. You can examine the impact of drama in arts, creativity, health and wellbeing in community or educational contexts, with opportunities to undertake arts community placements for practical experience. As part of your studies, you will perform in, or attend performances at, public venues such as Pontio or our stunning Prichard Jones Hall. Outside the course you can prepare and publish submissions for the Writers’ Guild or you can join the Rostra Theatre Society, English Drama Society, or Bangor Musical Theatre Society.
