Overview
Highlights: This four-year course features an integrated foundation year - you will graduate with the same qualification as our three-year honours degree - a BSc (Hons) Environmental Science. Research-informed teaching draws on world-leading expertise in environmental and soil science, conservation science, rivers and catchments, crops, livestock, forestry, environmental policy, and more. Access to woodlands and farmland at our 252-hectare Henfaes Research Centre for fieldwork and research in environmental science, conservation, lowland and upland agriculture, forestry, and hydrology. The land at Henfaes Research Centre spans from sea level to amongst the highest mountains in Wales, all on one site, offering fantastic opportunities for teaching and research. Unique field facilities include Treborth Botanic Garden which benefits from diverse habitats, an underground laboratory, and an area of woodland designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). Excellent teaching facilities with specialist labs. Develop research skills, including field, lab and computer-based techniques, on fieldwork in locations as diverse as Eryri (also known as Snowdonia) and Tenerife. Accreditation by the Institution of Environmental Science (IES) means that on successful completion, you can start your journey to become a Chartered Environmentalist (CEnv) or Chartered Scientist (CSci). Course Overview: This BSc Environmental Science (with Foundation Year) provides an alternative route to undergraduate study if, for example, you cannot meet entry requirements or would benefit from a further year to prepare to for degree-level study. On successful completion, you will join Year 1 of the BSc (Hons) Environmental Science programme, which is accredited by the Institution of Environmental Science (IES). Our research-informed teaching enables you to tap into the latest findings and knowledge of staff whose specialisms cover all major areas within the discipline, such as climate change, food security, land use policy, pollution, soils, and water quality. At the same time, practical sessions, field work, lab and classroom lessons develop your scientific knowledge in biology, chemistry, earth science, and land and water resource management. Bangor is an ideal place to study Environmental Science as our location provides easy access to a wide range of natural environments, from the North Wales coastline to the varied landscape of Eryri National Park with its long history of multiple land use, mining, and quarrying. Fieldwork is an integral part of this degree with opportunities for residential trips further afield, as well as activity locally and across North Wales. The University’s well-established, world-leading research in the environmental sciences means we often collaborate with local, national, and international organisations that employ environmental scientists. This helps to ensure that the content of our Environmental Science degrees remains relevant and up to date.
