Overview
Our Epidemiology and One Health programme takes an integrated approach to studying health and disease conditions, recognising that the health of people, animals and ecosystems are interlinked and interdependent. This field is essential for understanding how diseases emerge and spread, and for the development of effective control methods. By pursuing a PhD in this area, you’ll contribute to vital research that enhances our ability to manage and prevent diseases. The University of Liverpool’sInstitute of Infection, Veterinary, and Ecological Sciences (IVES)brings together leading medical, veterinary and basic science researchers from across theFaculty of Health and Life Sciences. In IVES we study the epidemiology of a range of infectious and non-infectious diseases of people and animals, including zoonotic diseases. Epidemiological research in humans includes clinical and molecular epidemiological studies of a range of gastrointestinal, respiratory, vector-borne and sexually transmitted infections of adults and children in the UK, Europe, Africa and Asia. Epidemiological research in animals takes place predominantly at the Leahurst campus, where multidisciplinary staff, including clinically qualified veterinary researchers, statisticians, mathematicians and basic scientists, work together to address a range of issues. Entry requirements
IELTS: 6.5 overall, with no component below 5.5 TOEFL iBT: If you took a TOEFL test on or before 20 January 2026, you’ll need 88 overall, with minimum scores of listening 17, writing 17, reading 17 and speaking 19. If you took a TOEFL test from 21 January 2026 onwards, when a new scoring system was introduced, you’ll need 4.5 overall, with 4 or above in all components. TOEFL Home Edition not accepted.
