Overview
Highlights: This BA (Hons) Health and Social Care equips you with a solid understanding of the issues of population health, the distribution of health and wellbeing among the population, and the role of society and the community in promoting positive health and wellbeing. With a reputation for excellence in research and teaching of health and social care, our experienced practitioners draw on their relevant backgrounds, for example, in social work, public health and housing. The flexible degree structure offers a range of specialisms that enables you to tailor your degree to your needs and interests, such as social and health inequalities, health intervention and promotion, working with the vulnerable or policy making. Sharing professional experiences, discussing current affairs or taking field trips, previously to a community mental wellbeing hub, for instance, helps set the context of your learning as it applies to real-life. Bursaries are available from Coleg Cymraeg and the University to encourage more students to study in the medium of Welsh. It is possible to study some modules on this course in Welsh. Course Overview: If you are motivated by a desire to make a real difference to people’s lives, becoming an expert in health and social care management, improvement and innovation can help you do just that. This BA (Hons) Health and Social Care degree focuses on the factors that underpin and directly impact frontline public health services, including health education, health promotion and prevention of diseases, policy planning, implementation and evaluation, how to support vulnerable service users, and change management. It aims to develop the knowledge and skills required to improve the health and wellbeing of culturally diverse individuals and populations. Blending theory and practice, research-informed teaching is combined with fact-finding visits and examples of real-life experiences in communities, locally and across the globe. You’ll develop a detailed understanding of some of the biggest challenges facing society. From health inequalities and meeting the needs of the most vulnerable citizens, including the elderly, sick and disabled people, to tackling NHS performance and the backlog of physical and mental healthcare. The health and social care sector continues to grow and change - influenced not just by the fact people are living longer but also the impact of technology, funding issues and resource pressures. As a BA (Hons) Health and Social Care graduate, you will be ideally placed to play a proactive role in improving health and welfare, whatever the future holds. An alternative to clinical training, the emphasis on this degree is very much on the social experiences of health and care. As well as the NHS, you will learn about different health and welfare systems all over the world and examine the public health issues that affect entire nations, like in wealthy and low-income countries. Benefitting from a supportive study environment with easy access to lecturers, you will be taught by internationally respected researchers and experienced health and social care practitioners. Current initiatives include research into dementia and in public health, a textbook for nurses and a model of what a progressive and future welfare state might look like.
