Overview
The Institute of Irish Studies is an interdisciplinary centre of academic excellence with a global reputation for the study of Ireland. Our disciplinary base ranges from Irish history from medieval to modern times, literature, politics, conflict and peacebuilding, transformative justice, migration, cultural geography and gender studies. Established in 1988, the Institute of Irish Studies is a world-leading centre for Irish Studies research and the only centre of its kind in the UK, engaging in multidisciplinary research into Ireland and its worldwide relations. Our postgraduate researchers pursue many original lines of research across the spectrum of Irish studies, including literature, history, politics, conflict and migration, as well as the transformation of Ireland. Timeframes span from the medieval to the present day and we have a unique Irish library and archive, theMac Lua Library,housing many rare books, political papers and periodicals. There are also rich opportunities for expert dual supervision if you wish to pursue a cross-disciplinary topic. Entry requirements
IELTS: 6.5 overall, with no component below 6.0 TOEFL iBT: If you took a TOEFL test on or before 20 January 2026, you’ll need 88 overall, with minimum scores of listening 19, writing 19, reading 19 and speaking 20. If you took a TOEFL test from 21 January 2026 onwards, when a new scoring system was introduced, you’ll need 4.5 overall, with 4 or above in all components. TOEFL Home Edition not accepted.
