Overview

Highlights: Gain expertise in core legal subjects that satisfy the Bar Standards Board's requirements for barristers and provide essential knowledge for solicitors, preparing you for a future within the legal sector. Benefit from a supportive study environment with easy access to lecturers and classes taught by internationally respected researchers and solicitors, a moot court and dedicated law library. Active student Law Society, mooting competitions, field trips to judicial institutions such as the UK and Welsh Parliaments, Supreme Court, and guest speakers, which have included senior judges and prominent academics. To encourage more students to study in the medium of Welsh, bursaries are available from both the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol and the University - a successful application could entitle you to up to £750. Become one of a select group of Welsh-speaking lawyers. Our LLB in Law with Welsh was launched to meet the increasing demand for Welsh-speakers with legal expertise. Course Overview: Our LLB (Hons) Law with Welsh responds to employer demands for graduates with high quality skills who are confident and capable working through the medium of Welsh. It combines the study of literature, language and culture with core law modules, which includes the pathway should you want to become a solicitor or barrister. At Bangor University, we bring the study of law to life. Take part in mock trials, internal moots in English and Welsh, visit law firms, judicial institutions, and government institutions. You'll also have the chance to hear from practising lawyers, legal experts, and specialist law firms. Extra-curricular activities from our active student-run Law Society include the popular ‘LawSoc balls’ and trips to law fairs. On this Law degree, you’ll gain the legal and language skills required in a bilingual legal profession. Since devolution in 1998, there has been a growing demand for bilingual lawyers and those with legal knowledge - in both the public and private arenas. Not just to aid treatment of victims and defendants in court, but also help Welsh citizens understand their legal rights and obligations. As Wales continues to develop its own distinct legal personality, all primary and secondary legislation produced by the Senedd must be published in both English and Welsh. This requires legal experts to help with bilingual drafting of legislation, who can read and understand both versions of the text. Clients also need lawyers who can advise and advocate for them in the language they feel most comfortable in. You will graduate with a Law degree which meets the academic requirements for qualification as a barrister (Bar Standards Board compliant), but also provides essential knowledge for students aspiring to be solicitors. Amongst an attractive array of modules, you can choose vocational subjects tested in the Solicitors’ Qualifying Examinations (SQE) - such as Business Law, Wills and Estates, and Property Practice - providing you with a gateway to professional training to become a solicitor. A degree in law also develops lots of practical competencies: research skills, an analytical mind, the ability to listen, form sound arguments, read and quickly process complex information. The combination of legal and linguistic skills would be beneficial for a variety of non-legal careers, such as government or local authority, non-governmental organisations and policy work.
