Overview
Highlights: The foundation year prepares you for degree-level study, developing your subject-specific knowledge of law and justice, together with essential academic and research skills. This foundation year gives you an additional year to adapt and settle into university life ensuring that you are well-prepared to go on to study our three year LLB Law degree. Active student Law Society, mooting competitions, field trips to judicial institutions such as the UK and Welsh Parliaments, Supreme Court, and guest speakers, which have included senior judges and prominent academics. Benefit from a supportive study environment with easy access to lecturers and classes taught by internationally respected researchers and solicitors, a moot court and dedicated law library. Choose from a wide choice of specialist optional modules to explore areas that are of interest to you. Course Overview: Our Law with Foundation Year degree provides an alternative route into undergraduate study if you do not have the necessary qualifications or cannot meet the entry requirements to begin the standard three-year degree. The additional foundation year helps you better prepare for degree-level study, giving you a taste of learning at this higher level. On successful completion, you will join Year 1 of the Law LLB (Hons) degree programme. In addition to academic writing and presentation, you will learn how to conduct independent research, retrieving information from a range of appropriate sources, including cases, statutes, and other legal sources. This develops the same legal research skills you would employ in a future career and will help you during your LLB. The LLB is seen as a traditional ‘steppingstone’ to becoming a solicitor or barrister, however, a degree in law develops lots of practical competencies: research skills, an analytical mind, the ability to listen, form sound arguments, read and quickly process complex information. At Bangor University we bring the study of law to life. Get involved with mock trials, internal moots in English and Welsh, visits to law firms, judicial institutions, and government institutions. You'll also have the chance to hear from practising lawyers, legal experts, and specialist law firms. Extra-curricular activities from our active student-run Law Society include the popular ‘LawSoc balls’ and trips to law fairs. As a bilingual university, all of our compulsory law modules offer tutorials through the medium of Welsh whilst some specialist optional modules can be studied entirely through the medium of Welsh.
