Course Overview: If you are passionate about marine life and want to contribute to the conservation of marine vertebrates, then studying this BSc (Hons) Marine Vertebrate Conservation at Bangor University is the perfect choice. This degree offers a unique opportunity to delve into the world of marine organisms, their habitats, and the intricate food web that supports them. You will gain a comprehensive understanding of marine biology, marine science, and general principles of biology. Through in-depth study, you will learn about the taxonomy, physiology, behaviour, and ecology of marine vertebrates, including marine mammals, fishes, seabirds, and reptiles. The course also covers applied aspects of zoology, such as fisheries, aquaculture, conservation biology, and ecotourism. You will learn how these fields intersect with marine vertebrate conservation and the practical applications of your knowledge. At Bangor University, we believe in the importance of hands-on learning. Throughout this degree, you will have the opportunity to engage in fieldwork, including sea-going experiences. This practical approach allows you to apply your theoretical knowledge in real-world scenarios, further enhancing your understanding of marine vertebrates and their conservation. Our natural and ocean sciences facilities are second to none. These include our own 35 metre research vessel, the Prince Madog, several smaller work boats, an algal culture unit, specialised nutrition, microbiological, chemical and environmental labs, environmentally controlled rooms, imaging facilities, and extensive analytical equipment. When it comes to marine animals, we benefit from having shellfish beds, seal haul-out sites and dolphin pods nearby, as well as our own tropical and temperate marine and freshwater aquaria. Our onsite herpetariaum features reptiles, rodents and insects. Treborth Botanic Garden has a pigeon loft for bird cognition, physiology, and biomechanics research, and you can find Alpaca, sheep and bee hives on the farm at Henfaes Research Centre. Bangor University also has its own natural history museum with diverse vertebrate and invertebrate specimens, including marine fossils. The University is home to the Environment Centre for Wales, a partnership with the UK Centre for Ecology and Hydrology and British Trust for Ornithology Wales. Marine Centre Wales was established to promote discourse and research into aquaculture, coastal water quality, offshore renewable energy, fisheries, flood risk, marine data, and climate change. Elsewhere in Bangor, you’ll find regional offices of NRW, Dŵr Cymru/Welsh Water, Royal Society for the Protection of Birds and North Wales Wildlife Trust (and Natural Resources Wales ). Strong links with these employers provide opportunities for work placements and volunteering, and some contribute to teaching.
