Overview
This short course is aimed at those nursing and allied health professionals providing universal, targeted and specialist palliative care in primary, community or secondary care services as well as those caring for people living with life limiting illnesses across the age spectrum. It provides you with the opportunity to consolidate and enhance your knowledge and understanding of the philosophy, principles and practices of palliative and end of life care. Throughout your studies, emphasis will be placed on person-centred, holistic assessment and the development of multi-professional, multi-agency care and management plans from which optimum and evidence-based palliative and end of life care can be provided. Legal and ethical issues will also be examined within the context of palliative and end of life care and their implications for practice. This course has been developed in partnership with Kirkwood hospice. You will be taught by academics and palliative care providers who are experts in the field. A student-centred approach utilising shared experiences, reflection and critical appraisal will be encouraged. Varying blended teaching and learning strategies will be utilised including lectures, tutorials, group discussion and computer-assisted learning. You will be assessed by a portfolio and a written assignment. Your module specification/course handbook will provide full details of the assessment criteria applying to your course. Feedback (usually written) is normally provided on all coursework submissions within three term time weeks – unless the submission was made towards the end of the session in which case feedback would be available on request after the formal publication of results. Feedback on exam performance/final coursework is available on request after the publication of results.
