Overview
Highlights: BSc (Hons) Zoology with Animal Management gives a solid foundation in zoology, whilst exploring research-driven approaches to animal management and husbandry practices. Topics include animal physiology, behaviour, animal health and husbandry, parasitology, welfare and facility management. Many sessions are applied, incorporating a range of examples from animal collections, aquaria, the commercial farming industry and our own animal research facilities. Regular visits and guest speakers provide a wealth of networking opportunities within the industry and an insight into career pathways. Previous examples include Chester Zoo, Welsh Mountain Zoo, Anglesey Sea Zoo, Knowsley Safari Park, ZSL, WWT, Genus ABS and the BIAZA Research Committee. Access to aquaria, a herpetarium, small mammal unit, Henfaes farm and Pentre Aber dairy farm. Observe/interact with snakes, lizards, fish, crabs, insects, pigeons, bees, sheep, alpacas and cows. This degree includes a compulsory animal husbandry placement module, supporting students in gaining valuable experience during their degree. Excellent facilities include biological, chemical and environmental labs, environmentally controlled rooms, imaging facilities, extensive analytical equipment, and a dedicated student research hub. Course Overview: The additional fourth year of this integrated master’s in Zoology with Animal Management allows you to achieve a master’s-level qualification, develop advanced research skills and conduct an extended research project. Should your plans change, you can also graduate with a BSc (Hons) at the end of the third year. All about animals, this degree allows you to investigate their behaviour, health, habitats, anatomy and interactions with their environments and ecosystems. With specialist modules focusing on developing key skills within the industry, you’ll explore a variety of key concepts such as animal health and husbandry, nutrition, behaviour, welfare, training, research facility management, commercial farming and zoo management. Many sessions are practical, and you will have the opportunity to apply your knowledge and develop your skills whilst visiting a number of animal collections, aquaria, commercial farms and our own animal research facilities. Situated next to the Irish Sea, Menai Strait and the mountains of Eryri, Bangor University has a long history of teaching and research in zoology. As well as dedicated onsite animal facilities for reptiles, rodents, insects, fish and crustaceans, Treborth Botanic Garden has a pigeon loft for bird cognition, physiology, and biomechanics research. Our University farm, Henfaes Research Centre is central to this degree, while our natural history museum features a diverse collection of vertebrate and invertebrate specimens. Incorporated into this degree is a compulsory placement module, where you will be supported in gaining professional experience within the industry and building a portfolio. You’ll be taught by staff who will share their own experiences of working within the zoo industry, and as animal technicians. Our specialist animal management modules have been developed alongside feedback from external organisations, with the aim of enhancing student employability. This degree in Zoology with Animal Management can lead to a career in zoos, wildlife parks, aquariums, animal sanctuaries, rehabilitation centres, nature reserves, the agriculture sector, universities and government research institutions, and even veterinary work.
