History

In 1823, Sir George Birkbeck, a great physician and philanthropist, founded the institute as London Mechanics' Institute. In 1866, it changed its name to Birkbeck Literary and Scientific Institution. In 1907, the name was shortened to Birkbeck College, and finally, in 2002, it was renamed Birkbeck University of London.
