History

Founded in 1828, the UCLan was established as an institution of "diffusion of knowledge" to achieve the students' academic potential.

In 1973, the institution's journey began as Preston Polytechnic, and a decade later, it transformed into Lancashire Polytechnic in 1984. In 1992, it marked a significant milestone by earning university status from the Privy Council, thus the birth of the University of Central Lancashire.

Now, it's one of the UK's largest universities, with a student body ranking 19th nationwide. Sir Francis Kennedy was the first chancellor to lead the university. He was succeeded by Sir Richard Evans, who served as chancellor from 2001 to 2016. In 2016, Ranvir Singh was appointed as the university's chancellor.

In 1991, the university made history by becoming one of the first institutions to offer undergraduate journalism degrees, prioritising practical training. A significant merger occurred in 2013, uniting the School of Dentistry and the School of Postgraduate Medical and Dental Education to create the School of Medicine and Dentistry.
