The University of Dundee started as University College, Dundee, in 1881 with funds from Mary Ann Baxter. The aim was to provide education for both men and women in science, literature, and the arts.

Initially, it operated independently but became part of the University of St Andrews in 1897, broadening its focus to include fields like medicine and law.

World War I challenged the college, yet notable staff and students like Margaret Fairlie, Scotland’s first female professor, contributed to its growth. In 1954, it became Queen's College and gained independence.

Following the Robbins Report, it separated from St Andrews and gained university status on 1 August 1967 as the University of Dundee.
