Housing and Accommodation

Aberystwyth has a variety of housing and accommodation options depending on students' circumstances and needs. This helps ensure that you will live in a comfortable and supportive setting.

University's guaranteed accommodation

The university guarantees accommodation for first-year undergraduate students in university-managed residences. Aberystwyth residences create a community that enables you to get settled into university life while forming lifelong friendships. The reassurance of guaranteed accommodation for new students is invaluable.

Halls of residence & private accommodation

There are a variety of halls of residence that students can choose to live in, including Pantycelyn, Cwrt Mawr, Fferm Penglais, Rosser & Trefloyne.

They offer a variety of accommodation types, including single-bed, two-third shared bed, and studio apartments. If students prefer living off-campus, there are also housing options available through private accommodation.

Room facilities

Rooms may have attached bathrooms or shared bathrooms as well as attached kitchens or shared kitchens, depending on the type of accommodation. Rooms with en-suites have private bathrooms while standard rooms have shared bathrooms with other students.

The total number of rooms available will differ each year, but it is structured for most first-year undergraduates as well as many returning and postgraduate students.

  1. Single bed / two-third shared: In the accommodation available from the University in the halls of residence, most rooms will have single beds in single occupancy rooms although there are a handful of twin rooms (shared by two people) as well, and two-thirds shared beds is not normal for a room style.
  2. Attached / shared bathrooms: Bathroom facilities vary between the halls of residence and within the halls of residence. Some rooms will have attached (en-suite) bathrooms, which offer private facilities. However lots of rooms will have shared bathrooms, usually with a smaller group of students on the same floor. Attached (en-suite) rooms are often more expensive than standard rooms and they generally have less availability.
  3. Shared / common kitchens: In connecting their halls, there are also varying kitchen arrangements. A lot of undergraduate halls will be self-catered, and have shared kitchens with cooking equipment for a group of students sharing an area or flat. Some halls will be a mix of catered / self-catered accommodation, or even if they have no cooking facilities, they may have a small kitchenette for light meal preparation, or other basic arrangements, along with the communal kitchen. Attached kitchens in individual undergraduate rooms are not common.

Guest accommodation

Aberystwyth provides guest accommodation for visiting family or friends. This is a great opportunity for students to host guests as they are provided accommodation on campus. The availability and cost will be different depending on your hall, and so it is advised that you check with the individual hall for details and how to book accommodation.

On-site facilities (In halls and campus)

Although the facilities would differ between individual halls, the University's Penglais Campus (which is home to most of the halls), has:

  1. Shops, cafés & restaurants - The campus itself also has shops, cafés, and restaurants. With cafés and shops around the campus, there will be options for students to find daily essentials and to eat. The Arts Centre Café and Students' Union Bar will be two popular places to grab something to eat, and meet people.
  2. Bar & gym - Students can relax and unwind at the Students' Union Bar, which has a lively atmosphere and has a variety of entertainment events. The university has a gym and sports facilities, which also offer fitness classes, and some outdoor sports facilities.
  3. Bookshop & bank - There is a bookshop available on campus with academic resources and stationery for students to purchase. There is also a bank on campus so students can benefit from convenience for their finances, while there are also convenient ATMs located on the Penglais Campus.

Riverbank & views

Aberystwyth has magnificent coastal views and natural beauty. While there is not a riverbank on campus for students to enjoy, they can enjoy scenic walks and views of the Aberystwyth promenade and surrounding nature walks nearby.

Related issues

  1. Contracts and costs: Accommodation contracts generally relate to an academic year. Costs differ depending on the hall, room type (en-suite versus shared), and catering status.
  2. Application: Students apply for accommodation after receiving an offer of study, following the application procedures and deadlines set out by the Accommodation Office.
  3. Residential support: Each Hall of Residence has their own Residential Assistants and Residential Warden, these staff can offer support and guidance, and also organise social events to create a positive living experience.
  4. Access: The University is committed to providing suitable accommodation for students with disabilities. If an applicant has any specific access needs should contact the Accommodation Office to discuss the available options.
  5. Private accommodation: A large number of students, especially those in later years of study, choose to live in privately rented accommodation in Aberystwyth. The university provides some resources and advice to rent for private housing.
