History

The history of Liverpool Hope University can be traced back to the 19th and 20th centuries with the establishment of three different teacher training colleges, each contributing to its unique identity.

St. Katharine's College dates back to 1844, initially in Warrington, before moving to Liverpool, and it was significant in encouraging the education of women at the time.

Notre Dame College was opened in 1856, primarily for the education of Catholic women. Christ's College was then established in 1964 with a view to training male teachers.

In 1975, they came together to create the Liverpool Institute of Higher Education (LIHE). Finally, in 2005, LIHE became a full university, assuming the name Liverpool Hope University, marking a new chapter in a long and distinguished history.

Recently, while the university mostly operates from Hope Park and Creative Campus sites, the legacy of its founding colleges and their historical places in Liverpool continues to inform its ethos and commitment to education within the city.

Key Milestones:

  1. 1844: Origins trace back to the establishment of St. Katharine's College.
  2. 1856: Notre Dame College, another founding institution, was established.

Student Life

At Liverpool Hope University, you will find a lively and welcoming student experience, where the exciting feel of a lively city comes together with all the resources and expert care available across its campuses.

This environment is made even better by the inviting and green area of the Childwall campus in England. It serves as an example of a supportive student community that provides personal and academic support as well as an expansive network of opportunities to develop beyond the classroom.

Life in a Lively City & Leafy Suburb:

Childwall Charm: The main campus "Hope Park" is located in the pleasing, green suburb of Childwall, offering a more peaceful experience, with an abundance of local amenities verging on the city.

  1. Places to eat and drink: Cafes, restaurants, and pubs are located in Childwall and its surrounding areas, which promotes eating out & socialising.
  2. Gym facilities: The university's Sports Centre at Hope Park provides excellent gym facilities, sports courts, and pitches, promoting an active lifestyle.
  3. Libraries: Students have access to a well-resourced library on campus (Sheppard-Worlock Library at Hope Park), which has generous study spaces and resources at their disposal.
  4. Employability hub: The university's Employability Hub has designated support and resources to help students plan and develop their careers.
  5. Green spaces: There are plenty of green spaces on campus at Hope Park suitable for relaxing, studying, or socialising outdoors.
  6. On-site accommodation: A range of on-site accommodation options are available at Hope Park, building a great sense of community and convenience.

City Connections: Liverpool itself, located a short distance from the Childwall campus, offers an extensive array of experiences:

  1. Diverse culinary scene: A wide selection of restaurants, cafes, and bars to meet all budgets and palettes.
  2. Cultural hotspots: The world-renowned museums, art galleries, music venues, and historical places are all well known on an international level to explore.
  3. Shopping and entertainment: The large stores and vibrant nightlife options to explore.

Comprehensive Student Support:

  1. Student life team: The Student Life team is there to provide comprehensive advice, support, and guidance on the wider issues of student life, including welfare, finance, accommodation issues, and personal matters. They act as the main point of contact at the university, and their role is to make sure that you have everything you need to be successful.
  2. Tutor-based personal academic support: Each student benefits from their own tutor based personal academic support. For example, the tutor will provide support on academic progress, study skills, module choices, and general academic wellbeing, working with students to build a supportive learning relationship and maximise potential.

Transportation

Liverpool Hope University offers various transportation options for students to reach its campuses and explore the city. The public transport network across Liverpool is excellent, and in addition to this, the university provides resources to help students negotiate travelling to and from university.

Public Transport:

  1. By bus: The bus network across Liverpool is extensive and many bus services operate to Hope Park and Creative Campus. Students regularly are entitled to discounted travel passes. The local bus operator, Merseytravel, provides timetables and route maps.
  2. Free shuttle bus: The University provides a free shuttle bus service which all students and staff may use to travel between the Hope Park and Creative Campus sites. This is an efficient and cheap way of getting to and from teaching sites and may have timed schedules displayed on the university's website and app.
  3. By trains: Liverpool has a Merseyrail system that encompasses the city. The train stations may be a distance away from the university campuses but there are nearby train stations (Mossley Hill train station (near Hope Park) and Liverpool Central train station (to the Creative Campus) that are not too far from the university and also connected to bus routes.

Other Options:

  1. By cycle hire: Liverpool has various cycle hire schemes that provide an environmentally friendly and adaptable way to get around the city and to/from campus. Students usually find docking stations close to university locations.
  2. By uber/cabs: Uber (and traditional taxi services) are readily available in Liverpool and are a great option if you want door-to-door transport. This is especially useful late at night or to transport a number of items.
  3. By car share: Car share schemes are accessible in Liverpool and allow students to rent cars for certain periods. This is a budget-friendly option for trips you may take only occasionally.
  4. By air: If you are a student travelling from further away or internationally, Liverpool John Lennon Airport (LPL) is a reasonable distance from the city and university campuses and has effective public transport links.

Housing and Accommodation

Liverpool Hope University provides a variety of accommodation options designed to create a comfortable and supportive environment for its students, generally at its Hope Park and Aigburth Park campuses.

On Campus Accommodation & Halls of Residence:

  1. Hope Park: The main teaching campus offers a fairly large number of halls of residence, providing the opportunity to be part of a lively community if you are an undergraduate student. Each of the halls have different styles and facility offers depending on what you might value for accommodation.
  2. Aigburth Park: This campus is predominantly focussed on providing residential accommodation specifically for postgraduate and international students. The hall provides a more peaceful student accommodation option, with a strong sense of study and community amongst a singular cohort of students.

First Year Guaranteed Undergraduate Accommodation:

The LHU typically carries a guarantee of accommodation in university operational residences for all first year undergraduate students who are eligible and had submitted their application by the stated deadlines. This gives a new undergraduate student confidence, and makes the transition from living at home to university living easier.

Room Availability & Configurations:

  1. Number of rooms: There is plenty of total room availability at both Hope Park and Aigburth Park, which should allow for the accommodation of a large part of our student population. The specific numbers may vary from year-to-year.
  2. Single beds: Most of the rooms in persistent university accommodation are single-bedded, thus providing a comfortable place to sleep and establish personal space.
  3. Two/third shared beds: While less common, some of the rooming options might involve shared rooms with two or possibly three beds, and are typically cheaper options. We elaborate on this however at the time of the application process.
  4. En-suite/shared bathrooms: You will find variations of en-suite and shared bathroom rooms among the accommodations. En-suite is a room with a private bathroom; although, be advised, this type of accommodation tends to be of a higher price point. The shared bathroom or toilet accommodations will typically provide a bathroom for a smaller group of other students on the same floor.
  5. Attached/shared kitchens: Kitchen facilities vary at each hall of residence. Some halls will share kitchen facilities complete with cooking appliances, refrigeration, and kitchen seating for the students. Other options, especially some postgraduate accommodations, provide either kitchen-attached or kitchenettes built into the units themselves or smaller shared units.

On-Site Amenities:

  1. Accommodation for visitors: If your family or friends visit while you're a student, there may be limited accommodation available for booking. Advance booking is typically recommended and subject to availability.
  2. Shops: The Hope Park campus has shops in what they call a 'convenience shop,' where students can purchase groceries, toiletries, and stationery.
  3. Cafés and restaurants: A range of cafés and restaurants are located on the Hope Park campus for meals and snacks with friends.
  4. Bar: There is usually a bar located on campus, which tends to be a social hub for students and staff.
  5. Gym: The Sports Centre at Hope Park campus has a fully equipped gym and fitness facilities for student use.
  6. Bookshop: There is a bookshop located on any campus to place orders for academic texts and stationery.
  7. Bank: There may not be a bank on campus; however, cash machines (ATMs) are usually located on the Hope Park campus for students.

Environment & Other Relevant Topics:

  1. Riverbank side: The University's main campuses are not located directly on a prominent riverbank; however, the city of Liverpool has waterfront areas that are accessible to students.
  2. Green and outdoor space: The Hope Park campus, in particular, is made up of lots of green and outdoor space, offering students pleasant places to relax, enjoy leisure activity or gather informally. Aigburth Park has some green space that can also be accessed by residents.
  3. Residential support: The university has some residential support teams among individuals living in halls of residence that offer support, guidance, and advice to homesick students.
  4. Internet access: Students living in university accommodation have reasonably reliable, wireless internet access across the Accommodation area.
  5. Laundry facilities: Every hall of residence includes laundry facilities that students can utilise, which often work via a credit or app system.
  6. Security: Most students want to feel safe and secure in their accommodation setting. The university has security measures in place such as staff and controlled access.

In essence, the LHU aims to provide a comfortable, safe, and supportive living environment that positively impacts your overall student experience.
