History

The University is traced back to 1827 through the founding of the Wolverhampton Tradesmen's and Mechanics' Institute, one of the first to provide technical education to the local population.

The next century saw the establishment undergo a range of changes, in line with the needs of the region. In 1926 it became the Wolverhampton and Staffordshire Technical College, expanding its curriculum to encompass more technical and vocational subjects.

During the mid-20th century, the university underwent significant diversification, notably with the establishment of Wolverhampton College of Art in 1950 and Wolverhampton and Staffordshire College of Technology in 1951.

These developments underscore the university's ongoing commitment to delivering specialised education. The campuses are spread across the city of Wolverhampton, Walsall, Telford and its location in Burton demonstrates its reach, while the university continues to focus its core mission of providing higher education that is relevant and accessible.
